KALIBO, Aklan -  Rep. Florencio Miraflores has introduced a bill renaming one of the country’s busiest airports in honor of a respected and influential Church leader.

Calling the air facility operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) the Jaime Cardinal Sin International Airport, the proposed House Bill No. 6016 seeks to rename the Kalibo International Airport (KIA) in recognition of former Archbishop of Manila’s lifetime contribution and spiritual guidance to the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Sin was born in New Washington, Aklan on August 31, 1928. He was ordained priest in 1954 and in 1974, he served as Archbishop of Manila for nearly three decades.  Sin, who died on June 21, 2005 at age 76, was a leading force in 1986 EDSA peaceful revolution.

Miraflores’ bill was filed with the Committee on Transportation chaired by Southern Leyte Rep. Roger Mercado, before the House of Representatives go on a break for the Holy Week.

Just last year, the 15th Congress passed House Bill No. 4863 declaring every August 31 as special non-working holiday in the province of Aklan to commemorate the birth anniversary of the late prince of Church. The measure was authored by Ang Kasangga partylist Rep. Teodorico Haresco, Jr.

KIA, the premier gateway to the popular tourist spot Boracay Island, caters regional flights from Singapore, Taiwan, China mainland and South Korea.  The ongoing airport development and upgrading of facilities are being implemented to accommodate bigger aircrafts and international travelers.

Meanwhile, the national government through the Department of Transportation and Communication (DoTC) is allocating P150 million to expand the facilities of the Kalibo International Airport.

AirAsia’s first Airbus A320 aircraft arrived in August last year.

Air Asia holds a 40-percent equity in AirAsia Philippines, through AA International, while the remaining 60 percent is held in equal partnership by Hontiveros, Michael Romero and Antonio Cojuangco.

MANILA, Philippines — The tourist-packed Kalibo Airport in Panay Island will soon get its much needed facilities upgrade and runway expansion after the government has allotted P150 million for the improvement of the gateway to the world-famous Boracay Island.

Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II said that Malacañang has approved the budget allocation to expand the facilities of Kalibo Airport to make it responsive to the demands of rising tourist arrivals.

Roxas made the announcement the same day that an Airphil Express Airbus A320 plane carrying more than 140 people from Manila overshot the runway after landing at the Kalibo airport. Although the plane overshot the runway by 60 meters or 200 feet, no one aboard the plane was injured, authorities said.

Roxas said that Kalibo’s existing runway has limited the airport’s ability to accommodate as much flights and as much bigger aircrafts as the nearby Caticlan Airport.“Currently, the airport’s apron can accommodate three planes only at a time. The airplanes have to circle and wait before they can land in the airport,” he said.If the Kalibo Airport accommodates at least 25 flights with its current size and facilities, Roxas said that additional flights to Aklan can be made once the airport’s runway is extended and the passenger terminal is expanded.“The P150 million budget will be spent on the expansion of the apron and the passenger terminal facility so that it can accommodate as much tourists as they come,” he added.
