KALIBO, Aklan - Direct flights from Kalibo, Aklan to Hong Kong has reaffirmed the standing of Boracay as the country’s top beach holiday destination.
“Boracay island virtually comprise all of Aklan province’s entire tourism industry,” said Aklan Gov. Carlito Marquez during the maiden flight of Kalibo-Hong Kong via Cebu Pacific last March 23. “This will improve our resort island’s status as the country’s premier beach destination.”


For his part, Cebu Pacific Air vice president for commercial planning, Alexander Lao said, “We believe this direct service from Kalibo to Hong Kong will open more avenues for business collaboration and trade and investment opportunities that will surely be a boon to the local community.”

The maiden Kalibo flight to Hong Kong had 86 passengers, majority of whom were foreigners visiting Boracay.

Last year alone, there were approximately 910,000 tourists who flocked to Boracay and the number is expected to reach over one million by the end of 2012.

The new Kalibo-Hong Kong-Kalibo route has also expanded the number of international flights at Kalibo International Airport that will be catering to a growing number of Asian tourists going to Boracay. The airport also accommodates flights to and from mainland China, South Korea and Taiwan.

South Koreans, numbering some 108,622, registered the most number of foreign visitors who went to Boracay last year. Taiwanese tourists came in second with 75,000, and Chinese with 67,000.
